The National Eye Bank of Taiwan is responsible for helping process and test corneas donated by nationals. Imported corneas from other countries do not go through the National Eye Bank of Taiwan.
Organs or corneas donated by nationals out of great love are assigned fairly and justly through the platform of the Taiwan Organ Registry and Sharing Center authorized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Patients requiring cornea transplantation need to be evaluated by an ophthalmologist and their data will be registered in the system of the Taiwan Organ Registry and Sharing Center while they wait for the assignment. The National Eye Bank of Taiwan helps with testing of the quality of corneas donated by nationals. Based on test results, the corneas from some donors might be unfit for use in optical transplantation that aims to restore the visual acuity; nevertheless, they can still be used in recipients requiring therapeutic transplantation due to other reasons. Some corneas, because of quality concern, can only be used in patients in an urgent need for corneas. In cases of such urgent needs, it is required for the staff at the hospital where the transplantation is to take place to visit the system of the Taiwan Organ Registry and Sharing Center and make inquiries about corneas in stock and related information.Go to the system of the Taiwan Organ Registry and Sharing Center
